Before I Fall, based on the popular novel by Lauren Oliver, is the high school mean girl version of Groundhog Day, the movie where Bill Murray’s character relives the same day over and over until he gets it right. It was directed by Ry Russo-Young, (Nobody Walks, Babes in Toyland)  and stars Zoey Deutch as protagonist Samantha Kingson, and Halston Sage as her best friend Lindsey.

Everything seems great for popular Samantha. She has a large group of friends and a boyfriend, but her life changes when she gets involved in a car crash and finds herself waking up to the same day again and again. Samantha has to figure out how to make the day right and become the better person. Unlike the comedic nature of Groundhog Day, Before I Fall focuses on the more serious subject of teenage behavior and what it takes to fit in and still be a good person.

I was moved by the message of this movie, which is to aim to be the best person you can be and to understand that how you treat other people matters. Although this movie might appeal to girls more than boys, the lesson is one we can all appreciate. I really enjoyed the movie and think that it would be a great movie for high school students to see on a Friday or Saturday night.
