Presidential Debate : Round 1

By: Taylor Marsico, Staff Reporter

It isn’t hard to say that the 2016 candidates are the worst ones yet. Donald Trump as the Republican nominee and Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee. The 1st Presidential Debate was held at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York.

People were not surprised by how childish the two candidates were acting while debating. Upon disagreements, rather than listening and responding respectfully, Hillary would make belittling faces and Trump would abruptly exclaim “NO”. This continued, especially when they brought up adverse things of each other’s pasts. For example, Hillary’s email scandal and how Trump wouldn’t release his tax returns to the public.

A majority of the debate focused on the current economy. Trump told viewers he would lower income taxes from 35% to 15%. Hillary let viewers know that she believes the middle class deserves a relief and that the upper class should pay their part.

Hillary seems to be focused on strengthening the middle class, minimizing the wage gap, combating systematic racism, and overall eliminating inequality. Although her policies are favorable, viewers are controversial about how legitimate she is.Trump seems to be focused on keeping successful businesses in the country, lowering income taxes, raising tariffs, and essentially putting into place policies that appeal to the wealthy.

When the mediator finally brought up the country’s disputable law enforcement, Hillary spoke about retraining forces, equalizing crime punishment, and strengthening gun laws. Trump, on the other hand, expressed that he wanted to recuperate law and order and further  background checks.

According to The Huffington Post, polls indicate that the greater number of voters believed that Hillary won the debate.
